511NY Southern Tier Rideshare is a FREE resource to help you find carpool partners who live or work in Steuben and Chemung Counties. When you sign up for ridematching, you’ll join other riders and drivers in a secure database. Former Car-Lite participants have blogged that riding with someone is more enjoyable than riding alone, especially for a long distance. Save money and improve your commute when you register for carpooling!
How it the Car-Lite Challenge Works
- Register. Register any time before or during the challenge! Note that you’ll need to log at least 3 entries (days with car-lite efforts) in order to be eligible for prize drawings.
- Log your entries. Every day from 9/22 to 9/29, when you walk, bike, take public transportation, or carpool instead of driving by yourself, log your entry on our website. The first 10 participants will receive a Car-Lite Challenge Goodie Bag. To be eligible for the Grand Prize Drawing, you must log at least 3 days of car-lite efforts. The more days you enter, the more likely it is you’ll go home with the grand prize! Keep track of your mileage so we can see how much we’ve achieved as a community.
- Spread the word. Check the blog for tips & spread the word about what you (and all of us) are doing to enrich the community. Walking, biking, busing, and carpooling are all eco-friendly alternatives to driving alone. Plus, they’re oodles more fun. So find a buddy and walk, bike, or ride together!
- Celebrate! We will be updating the website with the names of the prize winners. You won’t want to miss out on the fun.
Tip #1: Take the bus. Have you checked the bus schedule to see if you can hop on the bus for part of your commute? C TRAN has 8 local routes and 3 commuter routes that go to and from the cities of Corning, Ithaca, and Owego!
Tip #2: Park & Walk/Ride. Consider parking your car and then commuting the rest of the way by walking, riding the bus, or carpooling. There are park & ride lots along Route 13 and Interstate 86 (at Lowman and on East Water Street in the City of Elmira).
Tip #3: Car-lite grocery shopping. If you are going to go car-lite during the Challenge, then you’ll probably want to think about the way you shop for groceries. Think about what’s close to work – Wegmans? Save A Lot? Aldi? Weis? Think about stocking up on fresh foods at the Wisner Market or other Farmers’ Markets. What can you get at Byrne Dairy or other smaller stores that may be closer to home? What is your plan?
The Car-Free Challenge is a partnership encouraging our residents to reconsider the single person car trip and think about walking, biking, carpooling, or taking the bus.The Car-Free Challenge is supported by many partners working with the Elmira Chemung Transportation Council including 511NY Southern Tier Rideshare; C TRAN; and Chemung County Coordinated Transportation Committee members.
